Abstract
The damage caused by earthquakes all over the world, led to injuries embedded deeply in the memories of populations. Not only earthquakes but also the phenomena led by these later, such as landslides, liquefaction of soils and tsunamis that can usually be more dangerous than the earthquake itself. These catastrophes taught us the necessity of avoiding or lightening their effects in the future. It was observed that the degree of loss led by earthquakes depends on many environmental and social factors of the affected area. We can cite some of them like the topography, geology, tectonic structures, the epicentral distance, the nature of soils, the depth of substratum, the piezometric level as well as the construction type. Obviously the intensity of soil’ quake during the seism remains the principal factor that determines the damage degree. Many factors to be considered but the difficult one is predicting the quake’s intensity, and thus the damage resulted from an earthquake in a particular region. The seismic micro-zonation is generally recognized as the most accepted tool in the process of evaluating the seismic alea and the accompanied risks. The region of Constantine like all Northern Algeria is threatened by earthquakes which hit from time to time and that can engender sizeable damage. Making a micro-zonation of Constantine city is to draw up detailed maps which foresee the alea in question at every corner across the region of study. This later has a big utility for the conception of structures and urban arrangement. This study belongs to the national project which aims at making a seismic micro-zonation of all Northern Algeria in respect with cities such as Algiers, Boumerdes, Chelif and others.
