Abstract
This study confirms the rare status of the Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata undulata) in the regions of Ouled Djalel, Besbes and Ras Elmiaad in the Southwest of Biskra (Algeria). In fact, our work focuses on two main aspects: The first aspect is the accessibility to available food resources through the examination of droppings content and the demonstration of food rationing for the Winter-Spring life cycle. Obtained results show that this bird has an omnivorous diet with items of plant and animal origin where insects are the most present. In terms of abundance, we note that the orders of Hymenoptera are the most consumed with a relative abundance of 48.15% followed by Coleoptera with 33.33%, and Orthoptera with 18.52% of prey consumed. This highlights the agro ecological importance of the Houbara Bustard in pest proliferation regulation. In the second aspect of our study, we have estimated the reproductive capacities of Houbara Bustards in captivity under breeding conditions, followed by the behaviour of parade recorded in the breeding unit which reveals inter-individual variability. Also, the triggering of the parades follows an intra-population synchronization. It generally extends from December to June. The number of days of parade can vary from a few days to more than 6 weeks and this seems to be related to the effect of age and health status of each individual. The peak of this sexual activity was reached between the months of March and April, the breeding season showing the highest concentration of spawning is between late March and late May with a peak throughout the month of April. Consequently, observations of study sites (Ouled djalel, Ras El Miaad and Besbese) and breeding techniques of Houbara Outarde in captivity display clearly a necessity to create a breeding centre for the Boubara Bustard "Chlamydotis undulata undulata" and other fauna and flora species.
