Abstract

This study discusses the challenges of teaching creative writing through the literary texts, the sample approach, and the workshop to third year LMD students of English, Batna 2 University. However, introducing creative writing in a short period of time, one year, with a one hour and a half per week will create a crucial problem among both teachers and students. Thus, "how can teachers of creative writing train the students, during one year, to write creatively, and to develop the students’ creative potentialities by exploring its various genres?" is the main problem. In this regard, we aim at critically checking the usefulness of adopting new ways, approaches, and techniques as appropriate inputs. These new dimensions refer to the combination of the three well-known approaches (the process, the product, and the genre) and labeling them as “the Sample Approach” for the participants are exposed to samples of literary texts not model ones. Within this approach the researcher checks the “how, what, and what type of text is produced”. Also, in any creative writing class, students have to be drawn together for one main objective which is to develop their performances in writing creatively and thinking critically; it can refer to such a classroom context as a “workshop”. Hence, the collaborative use of the three inputs all together, might give better results in improving the students’ performances in creative writing. Achieving such an aim, the researcher needs both qualitative and quantitative data that is collected through several tools such as two questionnaires, and one interview, which are conducted and administered to three categories of participants who are involved in this study: 19 teachers out of 49; 94 students out of 470; and 12 experts who teach English at different Algerian Universities. The fact that supports this study is the use of a pretest and a posttest that include three main parts each. Bridging the gap between both tests, we use three progress tests that correspond to the three phases of the experiment. Furthermore, we rely on some coordinating meetings and discussions with colleagues. Throughout this investigation, we attempt to answer the aforementioned questions and to confirm or reject the hypothesis by testing it within the findings of the experimental design. Then, a ‘t’ test is used and calculated to prove the effectiveness of the innovative treatment used in the teaching of creative writing. This is achieved by the use of the obtained t- for (92) degrees of freedom, i.e., the tobs (9.18) is greater than the tcrit (1.66). Accordingly, this investigation will bring forth some advice and suggestions along with some pedagogical recommendations.
